Caring for Your Globe
Caring for Your Globe
This globe is a precision instrument and a work of art. Whether you are displaying it in a classroom, office, or library, following these simple care guidelines will ensure it remains a cherished item for years to come.
1. Cleaning the Map Surface
- The Golden Rule: Always start with a soft, dry microfiber cloth. This is usually enough to remove dust and fingerprints.
- For Raised Relief: If your globe features textured mountains, dust can settle in the crevices. We recommend using a soft-bristled lens brush or a clean makeup brush to gently sweep dust out of the relief details.
- Deep Cleaning: If the surface requires more attention, use a soft cloth slightly dampened with warm water only. Wipe gently in a circular motion and dry immediately.
- Avoid Chemicals: Never use alcohol, glass cleaners (like Windex), or abrasive scrubbing pads. These harsh chemicals can strip the protective coating, cloud the acrylic on illuminated models, or fade the printing.
2. Placement & Environment
- Avoid Direct Sunlight: Prolonged exposure to harsh UV rays can fade the map’s ink over time. Place your globe in a spot that receives ambient light but is away from direct window glare.
- Temperature Control: Keep the globe away from direct heat sources (radiators, fireplaces, vents). Extreme heat can dry out wood stands or cause decorative meridian tapes to peel.
3. Caring for the Stand & Meridian
- Wood Bases: Treat wood stands like fine furniture. Dust regularly and use a silicone-free furniture polish sparingly, applied to the cloth first—never directly on the wood.
- Metal & Brass: Simply wipe with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid metal polishes, as they are often abrasive and can remove the protective clear coat on brass-plated meridians.

A Vision of the Desert
The Replogle San Marcos is a stunning piece of history brought to life. Part of the Frank Lloyd Wright Collection, this globe is an adaptation of a furniture design Wright created in 1928 for the San Marcos in the Desert—a luxurious resort planned for Chandler, Arizona. Although the resort was never built due to the stock market crash of 1929, Wright's detailed sketches for the interior furniture survived, allowing this unique geometric design to finally be realized.
Geometric Harmony
The stand is a masterclass in Wright's signature geometric style, specifically his use of the 60-degree angle.
-
Architectural Base: Crafted from solid hardwood with a rich walnut finish, the stand features three legs angled at 60 degrees that support a distinctive hexagonal top. This design was originally intended for small accent tables in the resort's Dining Pavilion.
-
Full-Swing Meridian: The globe is mounted in a die-cast metal full-swing meridian. This gimbal-style mounting allows you to rotate the globe in any direction—up, down, or around—providing a complete view of the world without obstruction.
Antique Cartography
The map palette is chosen to complement the warm wood tones of the stand.
-
Antique Ocean: The oceans are a soft parchment color, reminiscent of old-world navigation charts.
-
Copper Tones: The continents feature rich copper and earth-tone shadings, echoing the colors of the Arizona desert landscape that inspired the original architecture.
-
Raised Relief: The 12-inch sphere features raised relief texture, highlighting the world's mountain ranges in 3D.
Proudly Made in the USA, the San Marcos is a tribute to what might have been—a functional work of art for the history buff or architecture enthusiast.
